Dede has raced bicycles professionally and has been a member of the United States National Cycling Team for fifteen years. In 2004, she won a silver medal in the Athens Olympic Games, which was the highlight of her career. Throughout her career, she won 3 World Championship medals, 2 Pan American Games gold medals, had 2 World Cup victories, 6 National Championship titles and many other elite international titles.
Prior to her career as a cyclist she competed on the US National Speed skating team where she was a several time National Champion.
Dede has been coached and advised by many of the best exercise phsysiologists and coaches in both speedskating and cycling, including Dr. Mike Woods, Connie and Davis Phinney, Dr. Allen Lim, Chris Carmichael, and Dr. Shannon Sovndal. She was a part of USA Cycling's Project 96 where she received a wealth of knowledge in aerodynamics, power and altitude training. She has also studied nutrition and physiology at the University of Colorado.
While attending the University of Colorado - Boulder, Dede won the Montreal World Cup in 2002. In 2003, she completed her undergraduate studies in International Affairs and French and graduated from the University of Colorado - Boulder with honors.
In 2004 Dede was named North American Cyclist of the year. She retired from competitive cycling at the end of the 2004 season and currently writes columns for cycling and sporting publications, lectures on training and her experiences as a female athlete and coaches.
