Owen earned his Master's degree in Exercise Science from Montana State University, Bozeman and his Bachelor's degree in Exercise Physiology from California State University, Chico. His academic concentrations included endurance cycling performance and sports biomechanics. He has been a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) with the National Strength and Conditioning Association since 1997 and an Expert-Level coach with USA Cycling since 2000. He currently teaches nutrition for health and performance at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Owen is a former competitive road and mountain cyclist. In his spare time he trains for ultra-endurance mountain biking, trail running, and skiing events. He currently lives in Nederland, Colorado with his wife and dog.
